I am a huge fan of Black Truffles. If you don’t know what it is, it’s called كمأة سوداء in Arabic or فقع الاسود in Kuwaiti Arabic. It’s expensive & rare to find. The price can reach up to $1000 per pound. When I go to a restaurant abroad, I always check whether there is a dish that is flavored with Black Truffles. The beauty of Black truffles, you only need a few shaves of it to flavor the dish as it has strong earthly flavor. One of my favorite Black Truffle dishes is in Dubai Armani Cafe. It’s pasta: Maltagliati with Porcini Mushrooms & Black truffle. If you are planning to go there & are into Black Truffles, I strongly recommend it.
Anyways, a few months ago my sister’s friend, knowing how crazy I am for Black Truffles, bought me Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Black Truffles from Bateel in Dubai. I tried it. It’s unbelievably delicious. I use it mainly for salad dressings but you can use it for pastas, cook your vegetables with it or even make on Egg omelet. For salads, You only need a tiny drizzle of it with a gourmet (aged) Balsamic Vinegar with a tiny pinch of Salt & Pepper to dress your salad. You can eat it with whatever basic salad combination you want and it will still taste amazing. Sometimes Co-operation (جمعيات) sells aged Balsamic Vinegar. If you can’t it find in your area, Sultan Center sells them and the Gourmet section in Shamiyah Co-operation (جمعية الشامية).
Last weekend, I went to Dubai & I decided to check out more of their products & buy Black truffle flavored Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It turned out they have three kinds of flavored Extra Virgin Olive oil: Porcini Mushrooms, White Truffle & Black Truffle. I bought all kinds. I can’t wait to try the Porcini kind on Risotto.
They also have Date mustard & Date Pesto. My sister already tried the Date Pesto before & said it was delicious. I bought a bottle of Date Mustard & I tasted it. Since I like honey mustard, the same goes for Date Mustard.
Bateel had two kinds of Date Balsamic Vinegar. One that is aged 6 years and the other one is aged 10 years. I decided to try their 6 years aged Date Balsamic Vinegar. Since it was made with Dates, it tasted sweet & sour. However, I bought better sweetened Balsamic Vinegar in Kuwait. Not sure whether I will buy it again. Though, I will give it another try.
Unfortunately, none of the products I mentioned today are sold in Bateel Store in Kuwait. I called them to ask whether they were available. They told me since people don’t buy them, they have stopped importing them.
If you are visiting Dubai, buy them from there and ask the store to wrap them for you. They happily wrapped each bottle in bubble wraps and they all made it safely in Kuwait. However, the airport security in Kuwait might stop you to ask you what are in these bottles like they did to me. 😛 😛 😛
You oviously have good taste for food. Bateel olive oil and balsamic vinegars are exquisite. In Kuwait Bateel no longer has a franchise or shop. We do not supply the shop which uses Bateel name in Kuwait any products.
Thank you for clearing it up to me.
